Frank Huntington Receives Legislation Excellent Award

Francie Koehler, CALI Legislative Committee Chair

Monday, March 23 was a special day. It was the day CALI
members from all over the state join together in Sacramento
and Campaign for CALI. This is the day we meet with our
Assembly and Senate representatives and talk to them about
the value we offer to consumers and to the judicial system. It
was refreshing to hear Senator Jim Neilson and Assembly
Members Kristin Olsen and Brian Jones give their viewpoints on politics and their perspectives on the important work we do as private investigators and security professionals.

The highlight of the day was the presentation of the Legislative Excellence Award. This is an award that is given by the Legislative Committee for outstanding service in the Legislative arena. In past years, this honor has been presented to State Senators, State Assembly Members as well as to CALI Members. This year, Frank Huntington was recognized for his leadership in organizing the annual Legislation Day for the past 7 years. Congratulations to Frank and thank you to Barbara Burr, CALI’s first Legislation Day Chair, for making the presentation.

AB 921 [Jones] Private investigators:  Disciplinary Review Committee.

The CALI sponsored bill to establish a Disciplinary Review Committee passed out of the Assembly Business and Professions Committee on Tuesday, April 14. The next step is Assembly Appropriations.

Establishes a Private Investigator Disciplinary Review Committee (DRC), to which a licensed private investigator, under the Bureau of Security and Investigative Services (BSIS), may appeal the assessment of an administrative fine and to which a person denied a license to work as a private investigator may appeal the denial.

Online Education Update

Michael Julian, CPI, CSP, Chair

The board voted last year to accept a proposal from ZipEdTech, an online education program creation company, to develop a course for CALI that would benefit members and non-members alike, and serve as a new revenue stream to support our association.  Like many other online programs it would be a convenient start/stop, 8 hour program with video and interactive scenarios that would end with an exam to test the participant’s retention and knowledge.

"Venessa's testimony and ancillary support services are outstanding. Without her help an innocent man would have been wrongly conviicted of a particularly heinous crime. She showed a jury in a how Prosecution experts hand't done certain things that helped attack their conclusions and support the defense theory. She was professional in demeanor, well-spoken, attractive and as a result, the jury liked her. That is important in developing credibility. Her testimony was an absolutely essential piece in successfully defending that client and thus, saving his life." --Robert Schell, criminaldefense in Amador county
