AB5 Becomes a Law

AB 5 (Gonzalez) was signed by Governor Newsom on September 18, 2019. Thanks to the leadership and determination of Legislative Advocate Jerry Desmond and Government Affairs Committee Chairperson Francie Koehler, as well as the written and verbal support demonstrated by many members, licensed Private Investigators were exempted from this legislation. This may be CALI's greatest legislative achievement. This achievement was made possible by years and years of building relationships in the capitol and with multiple stakeholders. There are hundreds of professions that did not receive an exemption from AB 5. Some are similar to the private investigation industry and others totally different. We owe a huge "thank you" to Ms. Koehler and Mr. Desmond for their leadership and this monumental accomplishment to save the PI profession as we know it.

On behalf of the Government Affairs Committee, our sincere appreciation goes out to all of those who fought for this success.

The purpose of the California Association of Licensed Investigators Political Action Committee is to facilitate communications between our profession and the lawmakers who create laws that govern us. Without advocacy by our members, laws are often created in a vacuum.  Click here to learn about the CALI PAC.

Your donation directly contributes to the support of our friends in the state legislature. By donating, we can send investigators from all over the state to show support for our elected officials. Legislators do their best to represent their constituents. Contributions to CALIPAC enable our association to contribute directly to the campaigns of candidates for elected office, for our members and advocate to attend in person at fundraising events, and for candidates to know us and our interests. Contributions made to the CALIPAC are voluntary and not tax-deductible.
